"Luka Jantjie: Resistance Hero of the South African Frontier"

Kevin Shillington's (C62) new book "Luka Jantjie: Resistance Hero of the South African Frontier'' is out now on Aldridge Press.

It is a biography of a nineteenth-century African chief who was at the forefront in resisting the extension of colonial rule that followed the discovery of diamonds at Kimberley in 1870 in what is today theNorthern Cape Province of South Africa. The book, entitled: Luka Jantjie: Resistance Hero of the South African Frontier is being published in the UK by Aldridge Press, in South Africa by Wits University Press and in the USA by Palgrave Macmillan. After a big launch in South Africa in September, it is being launched at South Africa House, Trafalgar Squarein October.

Since completing his MA in 1976 and PhD ('81) in African History at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London, Kevin has taught at the University of Botswana, and since 1985 has been a freelance historian writing books about various aspects of African History, continent-wide, both ancient and modern. His single-volumeHistory of Africa, which sells well atColleges in America, is currently undergoing its third revised edition.
